Flameproof vs Weatherproof Equipment
The two terms are often confused. They describe different protections, and one cannot stand in for the other.
What weatherproof means
A weatherproof fitting is built to keep rain, water and dust out of the enclosure. This is usually described with an IP rating. Weatherproof equipment says nothing about what happens if a flammable gas gets inside and ignites. See understanding IP ratings in industrial lighting.
What flameproof means
A flameproof (Ex d) enclosure is built to survive an explosion inside it and stop flame and hot gases from escaping into the surrounding atmosphere. It is certified for use in areas where flammable gas or vapour may be present. Read what is Flameproof Equipment for how this works.
Side by side
| Weatherproof | Flameproof | |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Keep water and dust out | Contain an internal explosion and prevent ignition outside |
| Described by | IP rating | Hazardous-area certificate and Ex marking |
| Suitable for hazardous areas | No, not on its own | Yes, for the area it is certified for |
Do you need both?
Often, yes. Equipment fitted outdoors or washed down needs protection against water and dust as well as the hazardous-area protection. Check the IP rating and the Ex certificate separately. Ask us for the details of the model you are considering.
