What Flameproof Equipment is
Where flammable gas or vapour can be present, an ordinary switch, lamp or terminal box can ignite it. Flameproof Equipment is built so that this cannot lead to a fire or explosion outside the enclosure. The enclosure is strong enough to withstand an explosion of the gas that enters it, and its joints are made so that flame and hot gases cool before they reach the surrounding atmosphere. Because the protection depends on the enclosure, the cover must stay closed and every cable entry must be sealed with a suitable gland or blanking plug.
